With my bounty from my CSA it has become my mission this week to find new ways for my family to use our produce.
I've seen the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" (loved it by the way) and now it is the feature playing in my kitchen.
To test out this recipe we used 2 green tomatoes.
Dredged them in a mix of cornmeal, salt, and pepper (just enough to coat)
Then fried them until brown and crisp on each side.
The result were these tasty little morsels.
I topped them with a mix of sour cream and hot sauce (I prefer to use Frank's Red Hot Sauce)
I used 1 Tbsp of sour cream and then as many shakes of hot sauce as I thought we could handle (we like things spicy, even in the kitchen).
My children were not fans, but hey you can't win them all.
My husband and I though enjoyed them very much and look forward to including these in our rotation.
For a variant, next go round, we are going to try a wet batter and compare (it may end up being more like an onion ring...and really is that a bad thing?).
I hope you all have a Happy Monday and if you get a chance please vote for me at Circle of Moms in their Top 25 Family Blogs. The button to vote is on the right hand side.
I appreciate any and all support.
love the idea of these fried green tomatoes !
ReplyDeleteI always wondered about the best way to prepare fried green tomatoes. The dish sounds so exotic but yet it's really so down home
ReplyDeleteOh NO it's not he end of my journey .. it's just the start as far as I am concerned !

Those look delish! I'm excited about the day I get to purchase green tomatoes again. Do let us know how the wet batter ones turn out. :)
ReplyDeleteNot only do the tomatoes look delicious, but I love the idea of combining sour cream and hot sauce for a quick condiment!
ReplyDeleteHot sauce is the BOMB in my book and really can go on just about anything.
ReplyDeleteThe sour cream adds a little coolness to temper the hot.
Give it a whirl I promise it will not disappoint.
I want some!
ReplyDeleteLove always,
Mom
A local place where I live makes a Fried Green Tomato BLT sandwich. They top it off with some garlic aioli. I think they use a batter more like onion rings for theirs. I'm watching the green tomatoes in my garden like a hawk so that they get big enough to try frying. I hope your second experiment with the "onion ring style batter" works out well.
ReplyDeleteyou inspired me!! i made these tonight & they were so yummy! thanks for the recipe. i loved the hot sour cream sauce on them too!! mike loved them too but i couldn't get mia to try them :( she's a tough one. hope you all are well!!
